Our History

1875

Twenty-five-year-old Antonio Cambiaso Lavagetto came to Chile from Genoa in Italy with his uncle, Juan Bautista. Together with a partner by the name of Vallarino, they founded the company “Vallarino y Cambiaso”, focused on olive oil, yerba mate and tea and also exporting Chilean fruit. Eventually Juan Bautista went back to Genoa, leaving Antonio in charge of the business. When he formed his own family in Chile, the company took the name “Antonio Cambiaso e Hijos” and it went on to become a flagship business of that period.

1917

Mr. Antonio Cambiaso died in Valparaíso, aged 67. After his death, his sons Juan, Ernesto, Luis and Carlos Cambiaso set up the “Cambiaso Hermanos” company, the name by which it is still known today.

1921

The Cambiaso brothers set up the “El Vergel” factory, which was for many years a leader in the production and sale of canned fruit, vegetables and tomato sauce.

1943

Over time, the brothers decided to go their separate ways in business and the original company headquartered in Valparaíso, “Cambiaso Hnos.” came under the management of Mr. Carlos Cambiaso Denegri and Mr. Luis Cambiaso Denegri. In 1950, the company became a corporation.

1948

Motivated by their business drive, Mr. Carlos Cambiaso and Mr. Luis Cambiaso founded the seafood canning plant “Conservera Corral S.A.”, better known as “COCOSA”. It was a pioneer in its industry. Originally located in the port of Corral, near Valdivia, the factory was later moved to Calbuco where the availability of raw materials favored its operations.

1960

When both brothers died within a short period of one another, the company faced a crisis of such magnitude that it threated its survival, reaching the point where it operated with just two employees. At that difficult moment, Luis’s children Luis Cambiaso Ropert and Mónica Cambiaso Ropert stepped in and took over the management of the company. They put all their efforts into overcoming the adverse situation.

1964

This year saw the start of packaged Supremo tea, in line with the government regulations of the time. This soon became one of the company’s key products.

1975

On celebrating its centenary, “Cambiaso Hnos. S.A.C.” launched “La Rendidora” with the goal of making teabag consumption popular in Chile, where looseleaf tea had until then dominated. Thanks to its quality and affordable price, the brand is still going strong today.

1978

With its “Supremo” brand, Cambiaso became one of the main sponsors of Teletón, Chile’s most important and best-known charity event. It has taken an active part in this noble cause ever since.

1983

The “Superior” brand was created, exploring the field of plastics so the company could make its own tea packaging. This led on to its expansion and specialization in trash bags and packing products for supermarkets.

1986

The company broadened its business to include packaging and the sale of natural herbal teas, giving rise to the “Supremo Herbal Tea” range.

1989

“Cambiaso Hnos. S.A.C.”, with Mr. Luis Cambiaso Ropert at the helm, expanded its horizons, beginning to export its products to countries in North and South America, Japan, Eastern Europe and other countries around the world.

1990

Infusions and teas with health benefits were added to the natural herbal range, broadening the company’s range of goods.

1993

Cambiaso launched its organic herbal tea range under the “Garden of the Andes” brand. Its products are grown, harvested, processed and packaged by the company, complying with the highest international organic certification standards. That year also saw the birth of “Supremo Ceylon Express Tea” in innovative round teabags, inspired by a recent trend in the UK.

2001

The Cambiaso Brothers subsidiary was founded in the United States with the goal of facilitating the entry of its “Garden of the Andes” organic products into North America.

2004

As part of its diversification strategy, “Cambiaso Hnos. S.A.C.” acquired the company Alufoil S.A. and its well-known brands “Alufoil”, “Aluplast”, “Alupaper” and “Alubags”, along with its “Clean” products, “Basulip” trash bags and “La Facilita” multi-use bags.

2005

Cambiaso broadened its portfolio with the acquisition of the company Parro, Alvariño y Cía. Ltda., and its “Samba” and “Aroma” tea brands. The company celebrated its 130th anniversary, making it among Chile’s oldest and one of the few to still remain in the hands of its founding family, led by Mr. Luis Cambiaso Ropert and Ms. Mónica Cambiaso Ropert.

2007

The company signed a contract to represent the prestigious German firm Teekanne GMBH & Co. to package and distribute under license its well-known teas and infusions.

2009

Cambiaso acquired the “Adelgazul” brand, incorporating its cereal and infusion ranges.

2014

A fire caused major damage to the Placilla plant, leading to the write-off of over 200 production machines and a warehouse, as well as raw materials and supplies. This event impacted the production of the “Supremo”, “Superior”, “Mildred”, “Aroma” and “Samba” brands, which supplied 50% of the domestic market. Cambiaso worked hard to source machinery and products from around the world to allow it to normalize supply through its own production and the importation of other brands.

2015

The “Pyramids” range of teas was launched along with the Rashid character.
“Supremo” ranked as the tea brand most valued by Chileans according to a study by Chile 3D.
The “Superior” trash bag brand also became a Teletón sponsor, actively participating alongside “Supremo”.

2017

“Supremo” entered the Hall of Fame (Chile) as a Great Chilean Brand.

2018

This year we celebrated 35 years of recycling waste plastic. We recover around 1,000 tons a month of plastic collected throughout Chile, which we use to make our “Superior” (and “Basulip”) trash bags. This is a key differentiating factor when compared to the bags from other producers and importers.

2019

ProChile awarded Cambiaso Hnos. SAC. the Country Image Award in recognition of its track record as a company that represents Chile’s image in over 20 countries and stands out for its quality, service and commitment to sustainable development.

2021

Our “Superior” trash bag ranked as the most valued brand in the trash bag category in the Chile 3D study.

2023

In 2023, the “Supremo Pyramids” tea range surprised Chileans once again. These distinctive triangular-shaped teabags, which offer a unique infusion experience, now come in a brand new doypack format complemented with a contemporary and sophisticated design.

Superior ranked fourth overall in Chile and second in the hygiene industry for its positive impact on the planet, society and the economy, according to the B-Brands study, which assessed consumer expectations and perceptions on how brands contributed to their environment in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

2024

“Supremo” expanded its portfolio to include the Wellness range, introducing 10 natural infusions with beneficial properties. They will initially be available in the United States and parts of South America, responding to the growing demand for natural, healthful products.

2025

In 2025, Cambiaso is celebrating 150 years of commercial success with food products and articles for the home. Supremo tea and Superior trash bags stand out as the company’s flagship brands, along with over 12 brands present in the Chilean and international markets.
